Meet the Artist

Michaela’s art is a visualization of her experiences of woman in the modern-day world, exploring the relations between herself and her cultural identity as a second-generation immigrant. Through the extremely hands-on process of printmaking, she etches out images that represents her moments in grief, peace, growth, childhood joy, and femininity.

When not creating auto-biographical snippets into her mind, she seeks to form a better sense of her identity as an artist. Her current project, “The Urge to be Silly Prevails,” explores the impact of “silly” versus “serious” in the creation process; the objective being to create 121 prints to cover a 10’ x 7.5’ section of wall. Will the matrix from which the prints are created deteriorate faster than the artist’s will to create? How much enjoyment will remain at the end of repeating a “silly” task; how much will the audience enjoy it?

There is a sense of community in her creations, perhaps formed by the extrovert energy requirements or the sense of community within any printshop, she finds ways to integrate her peers into the creation or inspiration process—or prefers to curate and give them an opportunity to shine.
